Intent

Curriculum Intent

At Our Lady Of Perpetual Succour Primary, our intent for mathematics is to teach a broad, deep and progressive curriculum, using Maths to problem solve, reason and develop fluent conceptual understanding in each area of mathematics. We aim for our children to be able to recall number facts confidently and use these to support their learning of other areas of maths as well as practicing of calculation methods. We believe that our children need repetition and daily opportunity to practice and rehearse arithmetic skills in the mental and oral starter session of the maths lesson as well as developing fluency through practising key skills, repeating, reinforcing and revising. Children practise the 4 operations of maths (Add, Subtract, Multiply and Divide) and are given opportunities to reason and solve problems regularly in all areas of mathematics. Our resources and supporting materials support our vision and help children across the school to become fluent mathematicians who can reason and solve a range of mathematical problems.

We want our children to be enthusiastic, confident and competent in maths so that they leave our school with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in their further education and future real life situations. The maths after school club encourages and supports children’s love of the subject and children are celebrated for their maths work in Friday assemblies.

We encourage exploration of maths with a focus on children discussing maths at every opportunity possible. We want children to discuss their reasoning and not just learn a method but be able to justify why they have chosen a certain method and explain why that method is the most efficient.
