Eco Warriors

Eco Warriors

We care about God’s creation and encourage everyone to make our school a greener place.

Pope Francis said that we should "care for our common home".

At Our Lady's our Eco Warriors take the lead on encouraging our school family to make environmentally friendly choices. We believe that everyone can play their part in caring for our Common Home.

'God loves and cares for all of creationMatthew 6:25-34

Laudato Si'

Pope Francis' letter to all.

In this open letter, Pope Francis talks about the importance of looking after our environment and the impact humans have had on the Earth.

Spring Term

Our Eco-warriors have been making our school 'a greener place' by planting bulbs and seeds.

The Warriors were joined by some of our nurture children and Mrs Allan.

It was also lovely to see our Warriors helping and working so nicely with the younger children.

Planting bulbs and improving our environment are ways we can be good Stewards of Creation: Showing care for God's world.

The Eco-warriors invited families to litter pick in our local area as part of our mission to be 'greener'.

Thank you to all of our children, families and staff that volunteered after school for our 'Community Litter Pick'.

Everyone did a fantastic job of making our street and church car park cleaner. Father Barry was extremely pleased to see us making a difference to our local area.

Litter picking is a good way to show that we are 'Stewards of Creation'.

Thank you from the Eco-Warriors.

Autumn Term

Taking small steps to make a BIG difference!

In school we have asked everyone - staff and children - to start making small changes that will help make our school a greener place to be and helping us to live out Pope Francis' message of caring for our common home.

Issues we identified in school:

- Excessive printing
- Plain paper used and wasted
- Bins not used properly
- Recyclable items mixed with waste
- Unnecessary bin bags used in paper bins
- Litter on playground/fields and KS2 locker area
- Lights and interactive screens left on in empty classrooms

We asked everyone to make the following changes:
- Label bins and remove the bin bag from the blue paper bin.
- The photocopier room to have a scrap paper box (for printing errors).
- Every classroom to have a scrap paper tray.
- Paper collected in the photocopier room is to be used for scrap paper.
- Plain paper/card is not to be used for wet play/clubs.
- When leaving a classroom please turn off lights and big screens.
- Teachers to shut down computers at the end of the day.

Litter picking during Kindness Week

The Eco-Warriors have chosen an area of our school grounds to 'protect', they have cordoned it off and have asked our grass cutters not to disturb it. By allowing the grass to grow, we reduce the risk of disturbing wildlife that may live there. We may also encourage wildlife to create their homes there.

This Year

We are working towards the CAFOD Live Simply Award!

The LiveSimply award is an opportunity for Catholic communities to answer the call for us to care for our common home and stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers around the world.

Watch this space for our updates.
