Intent

Vision and Intent

At OLPS we want to provide our children with an enjoyable, fun and inspiring music curriculum which builds confidence, encourages our children to listen carefully and develop curiosity about music, and gives our children opportunities to form opinions about what they like and dislike.

We want our children to explore how music makes them feel and understand that music and singing can make us feel good.  We want them to express themselves and be creative, as well as work individually, collaboratively as part of a group and to lead others.

We want our children to develop an appreciation of music, including music from other cultures, music from a range of genres and styles, and music from different eras.

We want our children to explore the inspiration for musical pieces, understand how music can represent feelings and emotions, and know that music can be descriptive, emotive and a narrative.

We want our children to experiment with sounds and a range of different types of instruments, use these experiences to create, compose and produce music, and then critique and improve their compositions.

We want our children to learn to sing songs, develop skills, and learn how to play musical instruments for pleasure.  We want them to be able to show their skills to others and perform, including playing solo and participating in performances to audiences as part of an ensemble.

We want our children to have a variety of musical experiences, including listening to high quality music and watching show pieces, orchestras and musicals.

The music curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable, throughout their time at OLPS and also to their further education and beyond.
